Three-time Olympic champion Tadahiro Nomura was ousted in the second round after a defeat by ippon to world junior champion Toru Shishime in the men’s 60-kg class at the Kodokan Cup national weight-class judo championships on Sunday.

For Nomura, the Kodokan Cup was to be used as a stepping stone as he aims to compete at the 2012 London Olympics. But the 35-year-old is now back to square one.

“There is a gap between what I feel I have been building for and how I am actually moving. I have gotten weaker,” Nomura said. “Right now, I can’t really think about anything. I will have to really think it over,” he said, referring to possible retirement.
