NEW YORK (Kyodo) The Oakland Athletics have released Japanese infielder Akinori Iwamura, the American League club said Monday.

Iwamura was signed by the A’s as a free agent on Sept. 13 following third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff’s lower back injury but hit just .129 with four RBIs in 10 games.

The 31-year-old Iwamura was on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Opening Day roster and batted .182 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 54 games before he was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in late June.
