Japan-born North Korea striker Chong Tese bagged a brace to lead VfL Bochum to a 3-2 victory at home to 1860 Munich in their season opener in the German second division on Monday.

Giovanni Federico fired Bochum in front after 13 minutes before Chong restored his side's lead seven minutes before the interval, the ex-Kawasaki Frontale marksman heading in Bjorn Kopplin's cross after Djordje Rakic had equalized for the visitors midway through the half.

Chong headed Bochum further in front early in the second period and although Benjamin Lauth reduced the arrears just before the hour mark, the home side held on for maximum points.

"I'm pleased that I was able to score two goals but I could have had a third," said Chong, who joined ex-Japanese international Shinji Ono's former club after this summer's World Cup.

The bustling target-man played in all three games in South Africa as North Korea made its first World Cup appearance since a shock run to the quarterfinals of the 1966 tournament in England.

Chong failed to get on the scoresheet and the North Koreans lost all three games in a tough Group G against five-time world champion Brazil, Portugal and Cote d'Ivoire.
