Ramirez, Chono go deep as Giants down Tigers


Alex Ramirez and Hisayoshi Chono hit three-run homers to boost a power-laden offense as the Yomiuri Giants beat the archrival Hanshin Tigers 8-5 to take the rubber in a three-game set on Thursday.

Ramirez had a three-run drive to cap a four-run first inning before Hanshin rallied for four runs in the fourth, featuring a Matt Murton three-run shot to cut the deficit to one at Koshien Stadium.

Rookie outfielder Chono hit a two-out blast to give Yomiuri an 8-4 lead in the fifth. Yomiuri, which moved into a tie for first with Chunichi, has won six of its last seven.

Tetsuya Utsumi (3-0) won despite allowing four runs in five innings, striking out eight batters. Tatsuya Kojima (0-1) took the loss in the lefty matchup.

BayStars 2, Dragons 1

At Yokohama Stadium, Hayato Terahara pitched one-run ball over seven innings and helped his own cause with an RBI double as the BayStars ended Chunichi’s winning streak at six games.

Yokohama went ahead 2-0 on Seiichi Uchikawa’s run-scoring single in the third and Terahara’s double one inning later against Edward Valdez (1-1).

Carp 4, Swallows 0

At Jingu Stadium, Kenta Maeda pitched eight shutout innings and had two hits with two runs scored as Hiroshima blanked Yakult.

A sacrifice fly by Eishin Soyogi in the fifth inning made it 1-0 and singles by Akihiro Higashide and Kenta Kurihara drove in three runs in the seventh.


Hawks 9, Marines 1

At Yahoo Dome, Tsuyoshi Wada struck out a career-high 15 in a complete game and Yuichi Honda hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, leading Softbank to a rout of Chiba Lotte.

Lotte took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Tadahito Iguchi, but Wada (2-1) settled down to shut out the Marines the rest of the way.

Fighters 8, Eagles 4

At Sapporo Dome, Yoshio Itoi singled in two runs in a four-run fourth inning as the Fighters beat the Golden Eagles to end a three-game slide.

Buffaloes 5, Lions 4 (10)

At Seibu Dome, Mitsutaka Goto singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as Orix edged Seibu to end a five-game losing streak.

Tomotaka Sakaguchi led off the 10th with a double and moved to third on a Shogo Akada sacrifice bunt before Goto’s base hit to right off Brian Sikorski (0-2).
