OSAKA (Kyodo) Japan defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets for its first win of the World Grand Prix women's volleyball tournament Friday.

Japan won 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 at Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium after losing all three matches last week in Kielce, Poland.

In the day's other match in Osaka, Russia held off South Korea 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-27, 15-13.

A total of 12 teams are playing intercontinental rounds before the top five teams plus host Japan enter the final round from Aug. 19-23 in Tokyo.
