GDYNIA, Poland (Kyodo) Ai Sugiyama and Ayumi Morita suffered defeat to Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska in the final doubles match as Japan lost 3-2 to Poland in a Fed Cup World Group II playoff on Sunday.

Morita leveled the playoff at 2-2 after beating Urszula Radwanska in the fourth singles match 6-2, 6-4 but Jans and Rosolska overcame the Japanese pair in the deciding match 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to earn the victory and keep Poland in the World Group.

Japan’s defeat means it is relegated to its regional group.

“We should have tried to pull the game back in our favor when out opponents got going in the second set. It’s very disappointing,” said Sugiyama, who lost 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 to Polish starlet Agnieszka Radwanska in the singles.

Morita added, “We did everything we could. It’s disappointing to be relegated from the World Group and we want to try go back up as soon as possible.”
