Home runs carry Lions past Buffaloes


Takahiko G.G. Sato hit a two-run homer and solo blasts by Takeya Nakamura and Hiroyuki Nakajima also fired up the offense as the Seibu Lions blanked the Orix Buffaloes 6-0 in the Pacific League on Saturday.

Seibu left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii (1-0) threw seven shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out six with one walk in his first start after moving to Seibu from the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in a free-agent deal in the offseason.

Hawks 5, Eagles 4 (11)

At Yahoo Dome, Mitsuru Honma delivered a two-out bases-loaded RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting Softbank to its second consecutive “sayonara” win over Tohoku Rakuten.

Hawks lefty C.J. Nitkowski (1-0), the third pitcher out of the Softbank bullpen, threw three shutout innings, allowing no hits. He walked two and struck out two.

The Eagles led 4-3, but a Nobuhiro Matsuda run-scoring double tied the game in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

Domingo Guzman blew his second straight save and Koki Watanabe (0-1) was charged with the loss.

Marines 3, Fighters 2

At Sapporo Dome, Chiba Lotte left-hander Yoshihisa Naruse pitched two-run ball over the distance for a complete-game victory against Hokkaido Nippon Ham in his first start of the season.

Naruse (1-0) yielded six hits, struck out four and walked one in posting his 16th straight win in regular-season games against Pacific League opponents.

Dragons rout Yakult

NAGOYA (Kyodo) Akira Nishikawa hit a grand slam and Masahiro Araki drove in three runs in a 2-for-4 outing Saturday to lead the Chunichi Dragons to an 11-2 rout of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in a Central League preseason game.

BayStars 6, Carp 5

At Yokohama Stadium, Kan Otake, a candidate to start on the CL’s opening day next Friday, allowed two runs on five hits against Yokohama.

Veteran Hiroshima outfielder Koichi Ogata went 2-for-2 to raise his preseason average to .375. Shuichi Murata homered twice and Hayato Terahara gave up a run in three innings for the BayStars.
