ATHENS – Japan and Sweden have been awarded the FIFA Fair Play Trophy in the women’s soccer competition at the Athens Olympics, soccer’s world governing body announced Friday.
As part of its efforts to promote fair play, FIFA gives an award at each of its tournaments, with the teams’ behavior on and off the pitch assessed by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group. Japan and Sweden shared top place in the rankings, which take into account all of the matches of the final competition.
