Japan's Shihomi Shinya placed third in the women's 500 meters at the World Cup speedskating competition Saturday in Arena Ritten, an artificial outdoor rink in Italy. On the opening day of the two-day event, Shinya clocked 38.89 seconds to finish behind Marianne Timmer of the Netherlands, who won her third World Cup title in the discipline this season in 38.70, and Monique Garbretcht- Enfeldt of Germany, who finished second in 38.79.
