Joel Jeannot of France won the men's division of the 23rd Oita International Wheelchair Marathon on Sunday for the first time.

Wakako Tsuchida of Tokyo came in first in the women's division, winning for the third consecutive time, organizers of the marathon said.

A total of 348 athletes from 20 countries and regions took part in the 42.195-km event this year. Amid warm weather, about 230,000 spectators cheered and waved flags along the road and the racetrack.

Jeannot, 38, picked up speed in the first part of the marathon, and proceeded alone for more than 30 km of the course, reaching the goal in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 43 seconds. Tsuchida, 29, clocked in at 1:40:01.
