NEW YORK – Japan’s ace Ai Sugiyama sailed into the women’s singles second round with flying colors as she thrashed Conchita Martinez 6-1, 6-0 on Tuesday, the second day of the U.S. Open.
Competing at USTA National Tennis Center in New York, Sugiyama, unleashing well-angled devastating shots, needed only 44 minutes to dispatch her Spanish opponent.
“I think I am at the best of my career. I think I can continue to win if I can play my tennis,” said Sugiyama, who is ranked 15th in the world.
Shinobu Asagoe outdueled Bulgaria’s Magdalena Maleeva 6-4, 6-3 in another women’s singles first round, while Saori Obata downed China’s Sun Tiantian 6-2, 7-5.
