New Zealand's David Smail shot a 5-under-par 66 on Thursday to share the lead with Katsumasa Miyamoto after the first round of the 120 million yen Japan Golf Tour Championship.

Smail scattered four birdies over the front nine and added one more after the turn on a bogey-free trek over the par-71 layout.

Miyamoto also had a blemish-free round as he followed up an eagle on the 500-yard second hole with three birdies to grab his share of a one-stroke lead.
