Matsui wins election
Yomiuri outfielder Hideki Matsui topped the balloting for this year's professional baseball All-Star series while the Giants and Hanshin Tigers each won five spots on the Central League squad, Nippon Professional Baseball announced Tuesday.
Matsui was named on 1,298,046 ballots and will appear in the All-Star series for a seventh straight year via fan voting and for a ninth time overall.
Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes outfielder Tuffy Rhodes, who has hit 28 homers thus far this season, was second overall in fan balloting, receiving 1,241,803 votes as five of the six teams in the Pacific League were represented in the final fan favorites.
Along with Matsui, fans picked Hideki Okajima (middle reliever), Junichi Kawahara (closer), Kazuhiro Kiyohara (first baseman) and Yoshinobu Takahashi (outfielder) from the CL-leading Yomiuri squad.
Hanshin, meanwhile, buoyed by an early season run at the top of the CL standings also have five players on the league's first team -- Kei Igawa (starting pitcher), Akihiro Yano (catcher), Makoto Imaoka (second baseman), Atsushi Kataoka (third baseman) and Shinjiro Hiyama (outfielder).
Shortstop Hirokazu Ibata of the Chunichi Dragons was the only player from another team selected by fans for a spot on the CL squad.
Managers Tsutomu Wakamatsu of the Yakult Swallows and Masataka Nashida of the Kintetsu Buffaloes are scheduled to name the remainder of the CL and PL squads, respectively, on Wednesday.
The first game of the all-star series will be held at Tokyo Dome on July 12 with the second game following the next day in Matsuyama, Ehime Pref.
