Even as the Liberal Democratic Party’s senior leadership looks set to change, some officials are sounding out independent lawmakers about possible cooperation in the hope of obtaining the minimum three Upper House seats the LDP and ruling partner Komeito need for a majority.

In the next parliamentary session, expected this fall, the ruling coalition, with 121 seats in the 248-seat Upper House, might be able to secure the support of at least three of the nine unaffiliated members to flip the minority government into a majority in that chamber.

LDP Secretary-General Hiroshi Moriyama met with Takahiro Anno, the leader of Team Mirai, a tiny social media-savvy political party, on Aug. 28. Anno also met with Digital Minister Masaaki Taira, as well as with LDP parliamentary affairs chief Tetsushi Sakamoto.
