The Takata Corp. air bag recall already affecting a dozen automakers in the U.S. may widen as the nation's regulator heightens its scrutiny of the devices.

Volkswagen, Daimler, Jaguar Land Rover and Tesla Motors are among carmakers still using Takata air bags with ammonium nitrate, a chemical propellant that U.S. safety regulators are no longer confident in.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said those automakers could also be affected by recalls that already involve about 19 million vehicles.
