A man injured in a bar altercation with an American civilian employed by the U.S. Navy died Tuesday, the navy said in a statement.

Katsumi Nakagawa, 70, died of injuries sustained in a scuffle outside Live Bar Buzz near the Yokosuka naval base on Thursday. The name of the employee was not released.

According to local reports, Nakagawa was causing a fuss at the bar, where the American worked as a manager. The American reportedly took the man outside and pushed him. The man fell and injured his head.

The U.S. Navy said in a statement that the incident was being investigated by Japanese and American authorities and that it involved a civilian employee of the U.S. military who is currently in Japanese custody.

"The navy will continue to work closely with Japanese authorities in this matter," the statement said.

The statement added that the navy extends its "deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Nakagawa for their loss."
