Gyo Hani, former managing editor of The Japan Times and president emeritus of Jiyu Gakuen, died of stomach cancer at his Tokyo home on Thursday, his family said. He was 73.

Born in 1931, Hani graduated from Jiyu Gakuen in 1953 and joined The Japan Times that year. He served as managing editor of the English-language daily between 1977 and 1983 and retired in 1985.

A private funeral will be held for relatives only.

Jiyu Gakuen will hold a separate funeral at its memorial hall on campus, located at 8-15, Gakuencho 1-chome, Higashikurume, western Tokyo, from 2 p.m. on Nov. 6. The chief mourner will be Hani's widow, Sawako.
