Temperatures soared Sunday nationwide, with the mercury hitting figures equal to a midsummer day.

The city of Miyazaki marked a national record high for May at 34.2, the Meteorological Agency said.

The agency said temperatures rose due to a warm-air front that moved in from the south, stretching from the western area of the Sea of Japan through the Tsushima Strait. Areas posting record local highs included Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, at 34, and Wakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, and Nara at 32.7, the agency said.
