Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will introduce the new Avensis, a strategic car model developed for the European market, in Japan this fall.

Launched in Britain on Saturday, the Avensis is set to be released in other European countries this spring, the leading carmaker said.

It was developed for the European market, as was its predecessor, which has sold about 580,000 units there since it was launched in 1997.

The latest Avensis will be available in four models, including a 2-liter fuel-injection engine version.

Like the current model, the new Avensis is produced by Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. and will be exported to Japan.

The prices of units to be sold in Japan have yet to be decided, but those for the British market range from £13,995 (2.60 million yen) to £21,495 (4.00 million yen), a Toyota spokesman said.
