Police have questioned a 26-year-old man on suspicion he dumped a car off Nagoya port in a second such attempt to rid himself of the vehicle, it was learned Monday.

Nagoya Prefectural Police were planning to turn his case over to prosecutors, accusing him of violating the Wastes Disposal and Public Cleaning Law, police said.

The self-employed man, who was not named, allegedly brought the car to the port in a rental truck and dumped it from the wharf at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The man was caught dumping the same car into a canal in his neighborhood in April. Police ordered him to pay for the car's retrieval from the canal at a cost of 200,000 yen.

He told police he dumped it again because he thought it would cost a fortune to have the car disposed of via normal procedures, sources said.

Officers questioning him were perplexed as to his motive, saying it may have been more expensive to rent the truck than to have the car disposed of. Police intend to ask the man to again pay for the car's retrieval.
