Shimonoseki Bakan Matsuri

Every summer, the city of Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture turns back the clock to when it was called Bakan with a festival celebrating the area's history.

Dozens of programs will take place near Shimonoseki Station this weekend, but a highlight will be the re-enactment of missions that Korean envoys of the Joseon court took to Japan from the Muromachi Period (1392 to 1573) to the Edo Period (1603 to 1868) on Aug. 24.

Another highlight will be on Aug. 25 when around 4,000 dancers perform Heike odori, a folk dance to honor the Heike clan that thrived mainly in the 11th century. (Yuki Yamauchi)
