Yokohama opened its port to foreign trade in 1859 and the city has already started celebrating its 200th anniversary, even though that milestone is still 40 years away. This weekend the city will kick off the 10th Yokohama Central Town Festival to celebrate the countdown to 2059. Who can resist an opportunity to throw a party, anyway?
The event will be held throughout the city at locations such as Yamashita Park, which will be furnished with booths offering dishes from renowned local restaurants as well as hands-on activities.
You're in luck if you're a fan of street sports as the park will also be used for 3-on-3 basketball matches and, at Yamashita Pier, skateboarders and BMX riders will be showing off their skills.
The pier will also host free concerts starring pop singer Crystal Kay (7-7:45 p.m., May 25) and Crazy Ken Band (6:45-7:45 p.m., May 26), a 11-member group led by vocalist Ken Yokoyama.
For more musical moments, head over to Motomachi Shopping Street for re-creations of several scenes from famous musicals that will start at 6 p.m. each day. (Yuki Yamauchi)
Some activities will be canceled in the event of bad weather.
