Founded in 1979 in Manhattan's trendy East Village, the New York Theater Workshop (NYTW) is one of the most provocative and successful off-Broadway theaters in the United States. The megahit Broadway musical "RENT" by Jonathan Larson was born as a NYTW studio production in 1994 before it transferred to Broadway immediately after the opening of NYTW's main stage in 1996.
For this event, the Japan Playwrights Association has invited over NYTW's Associate Artistic Director Linda S. Chapman, and Doug Wright, a board member and writer of "I Am My Own Wife," which won a Tony Award for best play and a Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2004. The pair will present two daylong lectures on March 28 and 29 at the Geinou Kadensha in Shinjuku.
On the 28th, the topic will be NYTW's activities and policy, with the aim of searching for the ideal relationship between artists and theaters and arts organizations. On the 29th, the topic will be Wright's experience of the relationship between artists and arts organizations, based on his experience with NYTW.
"The Challenge of the NYTW" runs on March 28 and 29, from 1-4 p.m. at Geinou Kadensha, a 5-minute walk from Nishi Shinjuku Station on the Marunouchi subway line. Admission to each lecture is ¥1,000.
