Triathlon

Consisting of a consecutive swim, bicycle ride and run, the triathlon requires a great deal of endurance, even compared to other Olympic sports. Triathlon distances vary, but in the Olympics, the distance for men and women are both a 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike portion and a 10-kilometer run. Although the sport itself is fairly new, being first introduced in 1974, the sport has become well-known and became an Olympic event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This year, a new mixed relay with teams of two men and two women will also be introduced. The team relay event sees one competitor tackle a 300-meter swim, eight-kilometer ride and a two-kilometer run before tagging a teammate to repeat the same course. This is repeated until all four have completed the course.
Triathlon events will be held on July 26, 27 and 31.
