Shooting

Using rifles, pistols and shotguns, shooting is an event that sees competitors — in the rifle and pistol events — aiming at circular targets and awarded points on their accuracy of hitting the target. Other than 1904 and 1928, shooting has been a part of every Olympics.

In rifle and pistol, there are four gun types and three distances in the competition: 50-meter rifle, 10-meter air rifle, 25-meter rapid-fire pistol and 10-meter air pistol. There are also three positions in shooting: prone, which sees the shooter lying on their stomach, kneeling and standing.

Both men and women compete in the 50-meter, three-position; 10-meter air rifle; 10-meter air pistol; 10-meter air rifle mixed team; and 10-meter air pistol events. Only male competitors compete in the 25-meter rapid-fire pistol, while only women contest the 25-meter pistol event.

Shotguns are used for trap and skeet shooting, which see both men and women compete individually, as well as in a mixed trap team. Trap has shooters firing two shots at a single clay target launched into the air, while skeet sees them shoot one shot each at two targets launched from opposite sides.

Rifle and pistol events will take place from July 25 to Aug. 3, while shotgun events are slated for July 26 to Aug. 1.

Venue and access information

Also used as the venue for shooting in the 1964 Games, the Asaka Shooting Range in Saitama will be the site for this year’s event. For the rifle qualification rounds it will hold 800 people and 2,400 people for the finals. For trap and skeet, it will hold about 3,000 people. During the games, there will be shuttle bus service from Asaka Station on the Tobu Tojo Line and Wakoshi Station, which is served by various lines, as well as from Oizumi-Gakuen Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.
