Colin Firth wages war with lower classes in 'Kingsman: The Secret Service'
Under normal circumstances, any movie with Colin Firth has me from the moment he says "Hello." And "Kingsman: The Secret Service" shows off Firth playing a super-cool gentleman spy in a super-elite British intelligence unit wearing a super-bespoke suit. And he even quotes one of Hemingway's greatest lines: "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self."

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: 'initial exhilaration gives way to fatigue'
On the one hand, we have the fanboys, for whom "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" will be the "Best. Film. Ever.," as director Peter Jackson delivers a ginormously action-packed finale to his second Middle Earth trilogy. Kicking things off with a fire-breathing dragon razing the town of Lakewood, Jackson moves quickly into a supersized battle between elves, dwarves, men, goblins, bats, wizards and orcs, but alas, no winged monkeys. One film to rule them all . . . at least until "Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens" comes along.

Tokyo fans thrill to 'Michaelism'
In England in 1999, after the huge success of the ABBA-songs show "Mamma Mia," the theater scene became awash with "jukebox musicals." From 2002's reasonably successful Queen-based "We Will Rock You" and "Taboo," which drew on the music of Boy George/Culture Club, to the following year's failures "Tonight's the Night" and "Cliff," hinged on the songs of Rod Stewart and Cliff Richard respectively, there was a dispiriting deluge of such shows prioritizing content over quality.
