Rie Kaneto, Japan's Rio Games gold medalist in the women's 200-meter breaststroke, won that event at a short-course World Cup meet on Saturday.

Swimming on the final day of the season-opening meet, Kaneto won the final in 2 minutes, 16.99 seconds. The time was 0.26 seconds off her Japan record. Miho Takahashi was third in 2:20.61.

Russia's Yuliya Efimova, the Rio Games silver medalist, was second in 2:17.32.

"I was happy to win with this kind of time," Kaneto said. "Efimova came on strong in the second half and I didn't want to be beaten by her."
