Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo moved into the men’s beach volleyball semifinals after a lethal serve proved the difference in a three-set victory over Russian pair Nikita Liamin and Dmitri Barsuk.

Two aces in a row by Nicolai in the deciding third set secured the 21-18 20-22 15-11 win for the Italians, who reached the last four at the Olympics for the first time.

They will face either Russia’s Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov, who defeated Cuba’s Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez 22-20, 22-24, 18-16, for a place in the Rio final.
