NEW YORK – The Seattle Mariners gave right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma a one-year, $15.8 million dollar qualifying offer on Friday on the final day of the exclusive negotiating period.
Iwakuma, who was 9-5 with a 3.54 ERA over 122-2/3 innings this season which included a memorable no-hitter in August against the Baltimore Orioles, will have until next Friday to make his decision.
He will become a free agent if he decides to decline the offer and will be able to negotiate with Mariners or any of the other 29 teams.
No major leaguer has accepted a qualifying offer in three years through last year since the system was introduced.
