Kosuke Hagino won the men's 400-meter individual medley to capture his fourth crown at the National Swimming Championships on Sunday.

Hagino defended his title at Tatsumi International Swimming Center in a time of 4 minutes, 8.54 seconds, booking his spot for the FINA World Aquatics Championships this summer in Kazan, Russia, along with runner-up Daiya Seto (4:10.97).

Japan's swimming boy wonder Hagino won four titles for the second year in a row.

Kanako Watanabe also claimed her fourth title of the tournament, coming within 0.18 second of the national record to win the women's 200 breaststroke in 2:20.90.

Watanabe punched her ticket in the event along with second-place finisher Rie Kaneto. Junior high school student Runa Imai, who place third, failed to win a berth.

Takuro Fujii and Takeshi Kawamoto, who came first and second, respectively, in the men's 100 butterfly as well as women's 400-IM winner Sakiko Shimizu each secured their places at the worlds.

Rikako Ikee became the first junior high school student in 19 years to triumph in the women's 50 butterfly but fell short of the worlds qualifying standard in the event in a time of 26.49 seconds.

Whereas the women qualified in both the 4x100 relay and the 4x100 medley relay, the men failed to make the grade in the 4x100 relay.

A formal announcement of the team traveling to the worlds will be made on Monday.
