Former Japan coach Takeshi Okada has become owner of FC Imabari in the regional Shikoku League, the club announced on Tuesday.

The two-time World Cup manager bought 51 percent of the team's shares last month. Okada has had no previous involvement in the business side of soccer.

"Under new management, we are going to build a foundation for a club that will develop globally," Okada said in a statement.

The Ehime Prefecture-based Imabari finished third in the league this season and is hoping to join the J. League under Okada's guidance several years down the line.

Imabari said details of Okada's involvement will be made clear in February.
