KAWASAKI – Shun Sugawara threw three touchdown passes and backup Takushiro Hata added two more in the air as the four-time national champion Obic Seagulls whitewashed the Bulls 100-0 in the X League’ Central Division game on Sunday at Kawasaki Fujimi Stadium.
The high-scoring Seagulls (2-0) have scored 186 in two games and allowed zero points. Against the Bulls (0-2), all three units — offense, defense, special teams — scored at least one touchdown. Running backs Taeru Nakanishi, Takuto Hara and Hiroki Kato and third string quarterback Manabu Tatsumura each scored at least once on the ground. Tatsumura also threw a touchdown pass.
The Obic defense, which held the Bulls to only eight yards of total offense (69 yards to passing, and minus 69 yards to rushing), scored on a safety, a fumble recovery in the end zone and an interception return touchdown. Meanwhile, Keizaburo Sunagawa returned a punt 21 yards for a score.
“Because it turned out a one-side game, we used a lot of reserve players and that allowed us to stay focused on the game despite the big margin,” Obic head coach Makoto Ohashi said. “We are in pretty good football shape because we’ve kept playing football without taking a long break. Right after the spring season ended in late June, we took a short off time and started to practice and traveled to the United States (to play the all-star team of the local semi-professional league at Tuscaloosa, Alabama).”
Also Sunday in Kawasaki, the All Mitsubishi Lions (1-1) defeated the Taiyo Building Management Cranes (0-2) 30-7 in another Central Division game. In the West Division, the Elecom Kobe Finies (2-0), who beat the defending division champion Panasonic Impluse last month, marked another upset win by edging the Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers (1-1) 16-12 at Kobe’s Oji Stadium while the Impulse (1-1) blanked the Nishinomiya Bruins (0-2) at the same venue.
