Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who has been deactivated with an injury, was diagnosed with inflammation in muscle tendons in the sole of his left foot, the team announced Tuesday.

Youkilis was examined at a hospital in Sendai on Monday. It is unclear how long the former Boston Red Sox star will be sidelined, but the Pacific League club said it will continue to evaluate the injury to determine a timeframe for his recovery.

Youkilis is batting .215 with one home run and 11 RBIs in his first season in Japan.

The Eagles said on Monday that they will sign former Yomiuri Giants outfielder John Bowker.
