The Japan women volleyball's team secured its spot in next year's FIVB Women's World Championships in Italy with a win over Australia on Saturday in Asian qualifying.

Japan, which won the bronze medal in last year's London Olympics and is ranked third in the world, defeated the 103rd-ranked Australians in straight sets at Park Arena Komaki. The win lifted coach Masayoshi Manabe's team to 3-0.

Thailand also improved to 3-0 with a straight-sets win over Vietnam to join Japan in next year's championships.

Earlier in the day, Japan's men's team defeated New Zealand in straight sets to improve to 2-0.
