Takashi Uchiyama received the World Boxing Association's award as the 2010 Asian Boxer of the Year on Friday.

The world super featherweight champion is the first Japanese boxer to receive the award, according to the Japan Boxing Commission.

"It's an honor and I am very pleased," said Uchiyama. "This will give me confidence and I have to prove that I am a worthy winner of the award."

Uchiyama stopped Mexican champion Juan Carlos Salgado in the 12th round to successfully capture the WBA super featherweight crown in his first attempt at a world title last January.
