Los Angeles Angels general manager Tony Reagins made it clear on Wednesday that the club does not plan to offer a contract next season to free agent Hideki Matsui by Saturday's deadline for exclusive talks with the outfielder.

Matsui, 36, will therefore be free to hold talks with other clubs starting Sunday.

Reagins said he is keeping his options open to fortify the team in the off-season. The Angels have a preference for leaving the designated-hitter spot open to a variety of possibilities.

The Angels have already explained their position to Matsui and his agent.

This year, Matsui hit .274 with 21 home runs and 84 RBIs in 145 games, mainly as the designated hitter.
