Yoshinobu Takahashi and Hisayoshi Chono both homered and Shun Tono held the damage to one run over 6 2/3 innings as the Yomiuri Giants routed the Hanshin Tigers 9-1 to retake the lead in the Central League standings on Thursday.

Takahashi belted a three-run shot in the second inning and Chono went deep with a solo blast, both coming off Yasutomo Kubo (9-5), two innings later for a 6-0 lead at Tokyo Dome.

Tono (12-3) gave up five hits and struck out 11 while walking four and took over the league in wins.

The Giants’ Edgar Gonzalez and Alex Ramirez added RBI doubles in the seventh inning.

At Tokyo’s Jingu Stadium, Yoshinori Sato threw his career first shutout and Shinichi Takeuchi hit a three-run homer to contribute in a win against Chunichi as Tokyo Yakult won its third straight game.

Sato (7-6) scattered five hits — all singles — and struck out eight while walking one in a 126-pitch outing. Maximo Nelson (1-1) took the loss.

Josh Whitesell had an RBI double to get his team on board in the first inning, which was capped by Takeuchi’s drive over the right-field wall for a 4-0 lead. Norichika Aoki added a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Carp 4, BayStars 0

At Hiroshima’s Mazda Stadium, Eric Stults combined with one reliever on a two-hit shutout and got early support from a three-run second inning in a win over Yokohama.

Stults (4-7) only yielded a fourth-inning triple to Takehiro Ishikawa over eight innings. He struck out nine and walked two. Yota Kosugi (0-1) was charged with the loss for the BayStars, who lost their 60th game of season.


Buffaloes 9, Lions 4

At Osaka’s Kyocera Dome, Takahiro Okada homered twice and Francisco Caraballo hit a two-run drive as Orix beat Seibu to move into third place for the first time since April.

Caraballo’s shot off Ryoma Nogami (1-2) with two outs in the third gave the Buffaloes a 4-0 lead. Takada hit a pair of two-run homers to put the game out of reach.

Jon Leicester (2-2) won in relief. The Lions fell to their third straight defeat.
