Corporate teams that have long contributed to the development of sports in Japan have become the latest victims of the global recession.

Nissan Motor Co. said Monday its baseball, table tennis and track and field teams will be suspended indefinitely while announcing loss forecasts for its mainstay business and a series of restructuring steps.

The Nissan baseball team, a winner of three big titles, will bring an end to its 50-year history at the end of 2009.

It won the intercity tournament in 1984 and 1998 and took the national championship title in 2003.
