Shingo Matsumoto won his first title in men’s freestyle in the 96-kg category at the wrestling national championships on Monday.

Matsumoto, who represented Japan in Greco-Roman at 84-kg at the Beijing Olympics, became only the second male wrestler to win 10 straight national titles, including nine straight from 1999-2007 in Greco-Roman.

Matsumoto withstood an ankle hold in his second match against national invitational champion Takao Isokawa before executing a throwing technique to rally for the win and took just 26 seconds to beat Yoshitaka Shimoyashiki in the final at Yoyogi National Gymnasium annex.
