Title gives Ueda Olympic berth

Ai Ueda led a Japanese podium sweep in the women’s race of the Asian triathlon championships in Guangzhou, China on Saturday to clinch a spot in the Beijing Olympics, Japanese triathlon officials said.

Asian Games silver medalist Ueda, 24, came back from a 75-second deficit she faced after the swim and bike legs to secure her first Olympic appearance with a strong performance in the run leg, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 18 seconds.

Kiyomi Niwata followed Ueda with a time of 2:04:26 and Juri Ide finished third in 2:05:20.
