Money rankings leader Toru Taniguchi overcame an early blip to card a 5-under-par 67 and take a share of the first-round lead at the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters on Thursday. Taniguchi, who is gunning for his first money title since 2002, got off on the wrong foot with a bogey on his opening hole at the 10th but rebounded with birdies on the 15th and 18th at Taiheiyo Club’s Gotemba Course in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Shinobu Moromizato and Miki Saiki will represent Japan at the 2008 Women’s World Cup of Golf to be held in South Africa in January, it was learned Thursday. Ai Miyazato partnered Rui Kitada to victory in the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 2005 but Japan has since struggled and Moromizato and Momoko Ueda finished 14th at this year’s event in Sun City.
