Australia on alert for horse flu

Australia went on high alert Thursday after quarantine authorities identified three thoroughbred stallions showing flu symptoms, local media reported. A total of 50 horses are being kept in quarantine until they can be cleared, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. The development follows an outbreak of equine influenza in Japan last week which has thrown into doubt whether last year’s first- and second-place winners of Australia’s biggest horse race, the Melbourne Cup, will compete this year.
