INCHEON, South Korea – Japanese record holder Miho Sugimori completed a middle-distance double at the Asian athletics championships Sunday when she won the women’s 800 meters to add to her 1,500 crown.
Sugimori, who set a national record of 2 minutes, 1.84 seconds in June, outclassed the field and crossed the line at Incheon Munhak Stadium to finish 2.17 seconds ahead of India’s Santhi Soundarajan.
Sugimori became the first Japanese to win a double individual title since the inaugural championships in 1973. The Japanese men’s relay squads later capped the country’s campaign at the four-day event in style, winning both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meters and boosted its gold medal tally to six.
