Hisayoshi Sato broke his own national record in the men's 100-meter freestyle at the national collegiate championships Sunday, two days after becoming the first Japanese to swim under 50 seconds.

Sato touched the wall in 49.71 seconds at Namihaya Dome to win his first title in the discipline as the 18-year-old shaved 0.02 off the mark he posted Friday as the first swimmer of Nihon University's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team.
