Japanese rowers Daisaku Takeda and Takahiro Suda failed in their bid to reach the final after placing fourth in their semifinal race of the men's lightweight double sculls at the world championships Friday. The two, Japan's best medal hope at the seven-day event, were overtaken in the final few meters and crossed just 0.05 seconds behind France's Frederic Dufour and Arnaud Pornin, who finished third to clinch a spot in the final at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course. Takeda and Suda crossed the line in 6 minutes, 27.24 seconds on the 2,000-meter course while Denmark's Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist took top honors in 6:22.45 to make the final along with Joerg Lehnigk and Manuel Brehmer of Germany in second.
