NISHINOMIYA, Hyogo Pref. – Yohei Saiga struck out seven and pitched a four-hitter in a shutout Saturday as Aikodai Meiden of Aichi Prefecture blanked Daisandai Fuzoku of Osaka 2-0 in the first round of the 77th national high school invitational baseball tournament.
Takashi Hanayama executed a bases-loaded squeeze bunt to open the scoring in the fourth inning at Koshien Stadium, and Ryosuke Isaka followed with an RBI single to extend the lead for Aikodai Meiden, the beaten finalist last spring.
In other first-round games, Ube Shogyo starter Takao Yoshinaga struck out eight over the distance and held Takamatsu of Kagawa Prefecture to one hit from the fifth inning on as the Yamaguchi school triumphed 6-2. Hiroaki Tanba hit a bases-loaded pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth inning, lifting Josuikan of Hiroshima to a 5-4 sayonara victory over Higashi Chikushi Gakuen of Fukuoka in the day’s final game.
