John Bale pitched seven effective innings and Kan Otake worked two scoreless innings of relief as the fifth-place Hiroshima Carp edged the Chunichi Dragons 3-2 Thursday.

Kenta Kurihara broke a 1-1 tie on an RBI single in the sixth and Bale converted a two-on opportunity and drove in the eventual game winner to give Hiroshima its first victory in five games.

Riggan sidelined

OSAKA (Kyodo) Hanshin Tigers right-hander Jerrod Riggan was diagnosed with damaged ligaments in his right elbow and will likely be out of action for the remainder of the first half of the season, the CL club said Thursday.
