BEIJING – Fiery grand champion Asashoryu won the overall championship after beating ozeki Chiyotaikai in a playoff on the final day of the Beijing exhibition tournament on Sunday.
The Mongolian yokozuna, who lost to Chiyotaikai a day earlier, sent the ozeki over the straw ridge with a series of hard thrusts at the Beijing municipal gymnasium.
A total of 35 wrestlers took part in the two-day event in the first sumo tour to China since 1973.
