Japan's Aya Umemura failed to reach the semifinals and Ai Fukuhara could not qualify for the quarterfinals in the women's singles Saturday at the Greek Open, which also doubles as an Olympic test event.

Along with Umemura, ranked 20th in the world, and Fukuhara, 32nd in the world, Hiroko Fujii, Ai Fujinuma, Naoko Taniguchi and Reiko Hiura were knocked out of the tournament, leaving no Japanese competitors in the four-day event.

Umemura faced Chinese Guo Yue in the quarterfinals but was defeated 4-0 while the 15-year-old Fukuhara won the first, third and fifth sets and hung on in the third-round match, but eventually fell to world No. 9 Kim Kyung Ah of South Korea 4-3.
