Japan's Eri Hayakawa became the first Japanese runner to win the Honolulu Marathon when she came from behind to claim victory in the women's race on Sunday.

The 22-year-old from Tokyo overtook the frontrunners at the 35-km mark and never looked back, coming home in 2 hours, 31 minutes, 57 seconds to beat Russian pair Alevtina Ivanova (2:33:49) and Albina Ivanova (2:34:36).

Elsewhere for Japan, Atsuko Sugawara was fifth and was followed by compatriot Mina Ogawa in sixth.
